A little, very necessary announcement. In the first person, this time, because apparently posting in the third person makes some people question my sanity
:... It's hilarious how some people (not all of you - most of you are lovely and supportive and clever enough) think I honestly think I'm a mermaid, and are judging me because of it (wondering if I'm all right etc). Please - don't kid yourself. My being a *mermaid* is the same as someone holding down a day job at Disney Land being Cinderella. Is that person really about to try to get into a pumpkin? Or let birds dress her? NO. My putting on a tail is the equivalent of an actress donning her costume - I just choose to try to keep up the illusion here, because THAT'S PART OF ANY GOOD ACTRESS' JOB. (Heard of the theatrical willing suspension of disbelief? I'm so sorry I'm not a Brechtian mermaid.) I do it so children and their families will smile and be inspired and be happy. Cinderella doesn't hug little girls at Disney Land and then go, "seriously, though, this dress makes me look fat and the shoes are making my bunions itch. I CANNOT wait to get out of them and pop by McDonald's later. GEE my job is hard. You don't reaally think I'm Cinderella, do you? Ha. So daft." No. She keeps up the illusion so people can laugh for a little while, believe again for a little while, forget their troubles for a little while and just be happy.
... So thank you, people in question, for being blatantly stupid enough to worry after the state of my mind. I'm not going to be inhaling water or anything any time soon, so you can quit crossing your judgmental, ill-informed fingers. You're the one who needs a reality check.
